Location: Malaprop’s Bookstore, Asheville, NC
I tagged along with two lovely friends and fellow bibliophiles to this event yesterday night. It was so amazing to see the faces and hear the voices behind these books. It was also a wonderful experience for me because it was my first time going to these events. Being the worry-wort that I am, I practiced over and over again what I was going to say to these ladies. So when the time came to have my books signed, I was incredibly awkward and my mind went blank. Meeting authors is equivalent to me meeting kpop idols.
Anyway, Renee Ahdieh (The Wrath & the Dawn and its sequel The Rose & the Dagger) and Roshani Chokshi (The Star-Touched Queen) were the authors who came for last night’s event. The hilarious Beth Revis (Across the Universe series) was the moderator.
What I loved about this event was the central theme of diversity not only in setting but the characters themselves in young adult fiction. Being an Asian American, I was ecstatic when my wonderful friend Alex recommended me The Wrath & the Dawn because it was set in a fantasy world of scimitar wielders and swirling sands. Much different from my usual YA. I only heard about The Star-Touched Queen that night and was intrigued by the Hindu influences and the talking, man-eating horse, as mentioned by Beth Revis.
